WHIT-What are Sulfates and why are they bad for your hair?

August 24th, 2012

If you’ve been shopping around for new hair care stuff lately, you’ve probably noticed that a lot of shampoos nowadays are advertising this whole “SULFATE FREE” thing. I know that the first time I saw that, I thought to myself, “What the hell is sulfate anyway?”. After a bit of research I discovered that sulfate is an ingredient companies put in shampoos, soaps, etc-to create that wonderful soapy lather we all know and love. Unfortunately, due to the PH difference between sulfate( in shampoo around 7~) and hair (around 4~) the sulfate actually works to dry out your hair; leaving that tell tale dry and frizzy halo so many of us wake up to find. So, what is a girl to do? It’s simply really! The easiest way to tell if a hair care product contains sulfate or not is by simply looking at the ingredients! Common sulfates are Sodium Laureth Sulfate , Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Lareth Sulfate and Myreth Sulfate. Also, as a general rule most shampoos sold at the drug store will have sulfate in them. Unless they are specifically labeled SULFATE FREE, are from an organic brand, or a professional label-they probably have sulfate in it! However, don’t expect magically moisturized hair when switching from sulfate to sulfate free shampoo. Shampoo is after all a detergent and all shampoos will dry your hair a little-even with or without sulfate. In any case switching from sulfate free is the much healthier option for all who want instyle hair!
